I purchased this to listen to my music from my Zune while at work. It is very portable and rugged. The quality is top notch, and since I registered it, it now has a 2 year warranty. This was important since I am in the construction industry and my equipment gets abused.

The sound is top notch. Very clear highs without being “piercing”. And the bass is rich and full without being “thumpy”. I purchased 2 of these because you can daisy chain them together. Each speaker can be easily switched from a blended stereo coming from one speaker or you can configure the speaker to be a left or right channel. Very nice feature, plus each speaker has an outlet to power the next speaker. Two of these speakers configured as a stereo sound amazing.

I have been showing it off to friends and they are impressed.

This amplifier mates well with any of the modern video game sets. The sound quality is superb. You can accidentally kick or trip over it and it comes out unscathed. As a matter of fact, you can use this amplifier on any electronic sound item that has a standard headphone jack. This includes an ipod, portable cd player, and even the laptop I’m typing this review on. All you need is an output jack which can be purchased at any electronics mass merchandiser including Amazon.

Another nice feature of this unit is that it can be piggybacked to another unit. It also has output jacks. It is portable and convenient and stores easily. It does not need batteries, it runs off standard 110 v ac. It puts out 40 watts with a maximum sound pressure of 98 dB.

I got my Altec Lansing Stage Gig speaker today, and I LOVE IT! Straight out of the box, it looks and feels VERY professionally made, being crafted from durable, heavy-duty materials.

The grille over the woofer and tweeter is very clearly metal (steel, from what I can tell), the housing is made of heavy duty, thick plastic, and there are solid, thick rubber corner guards everywhere you might want them. It has a total continuous power of 40 watts, a 1″ neodymium tweeter and a 6.5″ midbass driver (woofer), a sound pressure level (SPL) of 100 decibels, and at 12.6″ W x 10.4″ D x 9.1″ H, it won’t take up much space to put out its high quality sound. Nothing is made on the cheap here, from what I can tell. The speaker weighs around fourteen pounds, so that should tell you something about whether it’s a lightweight toy or not. It truly feels as if this speaker would be carried around with a band’s professional sound equipment for tour performances, so it gets top ranking from me for truly feeling like a quality piece of equipment.

The audio cable that came with the speaker also has a nice length to it, to allow you some real distance to move it around the room. The cable connects to the speaker via male plugs, with female plugs at the opposite end requiring the connection of the male plugs from the audio components of your console’s output cables. From the base of the audio plugs, the cord itself measures approximately 9 feet, 9 inches – not skimpy, in my opinion. There’s also a 120 volt unswitched power outlet on the speaker underneath the sturdy, built-in handle, near the power switch, and I appreciate that the volume knob lights up when the power is on. Additionally, there’s a red and white audio output port to allow you to connect one or more additional speakers to each other, chain-style, on the right-hand side of the speaker (where the volume knob is also located).

Upon hooking this speaker up to my Wii and listening to the sound coming from the console (before I inserted any discs), I could immediately tell the difference in sound quality between what my TV produced, and what this speaker presented. I popped in my Guitar Hero World Tour disc and played a few songs with it, and couldn’t dispute the vast improvement in sound quality and range brought on by this speaker. I typically have my Wii connected to my Sharp HD TV via an HD component cable, which I thought already gave it pretty great sound, but the sound out of the single Altec Lansing Stage Gig speaker is SO much better. The sound is richer, deeper, and has a much wider range than what I heard just from the TV itself. The one thing that I DO have to say is that I wish I hadn’t needed to disconnect the HD cable’s audio components from the TV (since you have to connect those to the audio cord packaged with the speaker), but I’m sure that you can figure out how to keep everything connected and just add these in with a few HIGH quality connectors, with minimal loss of sound quality. More to the point, a Y-cable splitter that has a female plug and two male plugs leaving it (one to connect to the TV, the other to connect to the speaker’s audio cable) should do the trick. You’d need two of them, if the rigging all worked right.

This speaker is advertised for use with video game consoles, but, looking at it, I see no reason whatsoever why you couldn’t hook these up to your existing television setup, and boost the overall sound quality of what you view on your TV, if you don’t already have additional external speakers. All that it requires are audio cables. With the right cables, and two or more of these speakers, you’d truly feel like you were “right there”! GREAT sound, GREAT craftsmanship – the only thing that would make one of these speakers better, is TWO of them! Good stuff!

When I received this speaker I was very suprised by its size. From pictures I thought it was a small hollow plastic “toy” speaker made to look like a stage speaker to use with music games but it’s actually a good size with heft. For reference it’s about the size of a small subwoofer enclosure with dimensions around 12x10x10. The build quality of this thing is quite high. It has a solid feel to it as opposed to being hollow. The corners on the casing are protected by rubber blocks. There is also a built-in handle which is very useful for transport since many people may not always want it cluttering up their entertainment area all the time.

This is basically a 2-way speaker that could operate in mono or stereo mode. When in mono mode you could switch it to output the Left channel or Right channel, while in stereo it mixes the L/R channels together. The mono mode is very useful because it allows you to use two of these speakers each handling a separate L or R channel. The unit has standard RCA audio inputs as well as outputs. The audio outputs allow you to daisy chain more of these speakers so you’re not limited to just 1 or 2 speakers. The amplifier is built-in and is rated 40W RMS. As mentioned it’s a 2-way speaker with a 1″ silk horn tweeter and 6.5″ paper mid-bass driver. The volume knob is nicely sized and when rotated is buttery smooth. There’s also a built-in unswitched AC outlet so if you decide to add more speakers you’d only need one wall outlet since you could daisy chain the rest. When on, the orange LED lights up to let you know there is power which is quite useful for those days when you might forget to turn it off.

As for sound quality, it is very clear. Vocals are clear and highs are good due to the silk horn tweeter. Bass isn’t very strong but reasonable while midbass is clear, this is probably because the cabinet is an acoustic suspension design. The unit is able to play fairly loud but a separate subwoofer is highly recommended if you plan on sending full bass loaded music to the speaker. This speaker could also replace a bookshelf sized speaker and since it has its own amplifier you don’t have to worry about needing a separate receiver or amp. This speaker works well with game consoles as well as computers.

For games that already make the experience of playing in a rock band extremely realistic, the people at Altec have now gone an extra step and created a product that will bring the rock to an entirely different level. This 40 Watt amp will blow you away, literally, and will be sure to make you the envy of all your friends. This item works for both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and is a great gift idea if you know someone who is hooked on either of these games. If you don’t have a high quality speaker system, this is a great alternative that allows you to crank up the rock to 11!

In this era of tiny 2″-3″ speakers being driven by massively equalized and tricked audio using tortured reflex porting, we tend to forget just how good a well designed set of acoustic suspension speakers sound. Sure, all those little boxes that put out “amazing” sound are a nice addition to our listening options, but they don’t have the smoothness, transparency and effortless of top notch design of more conventional nature.

These speakers are sold as being appropriate for gaming systems. They surely are, but they are far, far more capable than that. The sound of these speakers trace their lineage to the great designs of Henry Kloss; Acoustic Research, KLH, Advent. They are clear, crisp, clean and uncolored. The bass is smooth and musical with no boominess. This isn’t the rather contrived and strained somewhat boomy and thumpy bass you hear from the likes of Bose Wave Radio II or Polk I-Sonic radios. The bass doesn’t get down to the sub-woofer territory, and if you want that for gaming, add a simple powered sub. For music and just plain listening, the speaker is great by itself. To my ears, the speakers sound so clean and smooth that I use the bypass switch on my EQ and drive them “flat.”

I saw these at a big box club store in the gaming department for a nearly unbelievable price. Too good to be true, I guessed, but I have always had good performance from ALtec Lansing gear. I got home, read the reviews here, and went back to get a pair. I was building a basement entertainment area for my 6th grader to play Wii and watch movies with his buddies. I had a 32″ Visio LCD TV, a decent up conversion DVD player, a VHS tape player for legacy titles, a 10 band EQ, iPod docks and a pair of these Stage Gig speakers. I also added a Sony SA-W3000 sub woofer. The whole setup turned out better than I expected, and the kid is thrilled.

For movies, I leave the sub on, but for music, I turn the sub off, and run the EQ bypassed. The sound from the Altec Lansing speakers is sparkling, musical, colorless and effortless. These speakers would make a fine audio system for a budget home theater system – budget but no sacrifice in quality. They have enough clean and distortion free punch to be used in a variety of sound applications, including block parties, pool parties, etc. With the size, power and sound quality of these speakers, the potential uses are limited only by your imagination.

I tried a variety of music from metal to classical, concert piano, vocals, rock and country. All sounded exceptionally good, and the clarity and transparency is especially apparent on concert piano and female vocals, two of the toughest tests of a speaker.

    SUMMARY:

This classical speaker design updated with modern materials, excellent 6 1/2″ bass/midrange driver and crystal clear tweeter coupled to a muscular matched amplifier pumps out sound in impressive quantity and quality that will meet the high performance needs of many audio applications at a very attractive price. Don’t let the low price and gaming orientation misdirect you – these are *serious* speakers. Buy a pair – the odd hook up is none the less pretty straightforward and works well. They are a pleasure to listen to. The longer you listen, the more you will appreciate the smooth, clean sound.

I actually got a demo version of this direct from Altec a while back and have then since been using it to satisfy my rockstar needs when I am playing Guitar hero. The construction is great and the sound that comes out of this think is awesome. I played for hours and before I knew it, it was late at night. After a few more songs I put the guitar down and turned this thing off. I love this product and would buy one if mine ever breaks.

I have been really impressed by this speaker – small in size, but extremely sturdy, and produces a good volume. As only an occassional player of Rock Band (on WII), I was unsure of whether it would be worth it to have the speaker. I think the speakers could be a little more obvious for those of us who are challenged with electronics, but once I got the amp plugged in correctly I found it made a big difference in how well you could hear. It was nice to have the sound coming from near where you were playing instead of through the TV, which could be further away. It definately added to the “band like” experience. Because of its size it is easy to store, which is also very nice.

I have a young man who loves his XBOX 360, and plays it all the time. Admittedly, he’s not into Guitar Hero, he’s into first-person shooter games. Well, no game is only explosions and gunfire (believe it or not!), there’s a lot more there to hear. Well, I got him this speaker, and he loves what it has done for his playing experience!

Now, he never plays without having his RM3010 speaker connected up. He likes the wide range of volume, and the quality of the music produced by the speaker. Also, as others have pointed out, it is a sturdy little speaker that is very handy for totting around to friends’ houses.

He loves this speaker, and that speaks volumes as far as I am concerned. If you have game console, or know and love someone who does, then do him or her a favor and get this speaker!
